Vienna Jewish Choir: “LECHAIM! – EAT, DRINK, CELEBRATE”

📍 Where

Palais Ehrbar, 28 Mühlgasse, 1040 Wien

🎤 About the Concert

Bread on the table, a plate of borscht, perhaps a piece of gefilte fish – and someone begins to sing. Many songs begin in this way, songs that have told of food, drink, and togetherness for generations. For where people eat together, stories are told and memories are shared, laughter is exchanged, and celebrations take place – often within the family circle, around the table, which for an evening means the whole world.

In this program, the Vienna Jewish Choir presents songs that originate in the kitchen and are meant for the table: drinking songs, table songs, and musical stories about enjoyment and conviviality. They tell of everyday life and celebrations, of simple meals and special moments – sung on long evenings when togetherness is paramount.

And sometimes, the silence grows. Between two songs, between two courses, there's also room for those songs that speak of love, of closeness and longing, of hope and the desire for peace. For all of this is as much a part of the shared evening as bread and wine.

Many of these songs weren't written for the stage, but for singing together – between courses, during a toast, or when the table has been cleared and no one wants to go home. They are direct, sometimes cheeky, sometimes quiet, sometimes melancholic, sometimes humorous – but always close to life.

Lechaim! is a musical toast to togetherness: to full pots and empty glasses, to shared bread and shared time, to songs that bring people together – joyful and reflective, exuberant and quiet. In short: to life.
